Factory Five has been talking about this for a while, and have now started producing the 818S/R kits. I had been thinking my next track toy would be a C5 Zo6, but I love me a project.
Not sure why the "R" (racing) kit is so much more than the "S" (guess what that stands for) kit. Maybe Factory Five is following the "we take stuff away and charge you more for it" model that Porsche uses for the GT3RS and Lambo for the Superleggera.
Anybody in the market for a Spec944? Fresh engine!

Wow this looks pretty awesome, especially for $10K.

I wish I liked the way the body shell looks.
But I can't make myself tolerate it.
This should be my go-to kit car... Subaru boxer powered, and affordable.
They didn't make the chassis long enough to support a modern, relatively compact EZ-series H6, let alone a big EG33 from an SVX. H4 only, evidently.
But the bodywork makes 70's era kit cars look better designed.
If I could put this chassis and drivetrain under a neo-Stratos fiberglass body shell (since Ferrari kyboshed any possibility of their chassis or driveline pieces under that body... I would be extremely enthused. Or anything anywhere near as sexy and well proportioned.
As it looks from FFR, with gratuitous slats and gills, and ill-fitting Camry headlights, ...not so much.

I followed this from when they launched the design competition. There were so many awesome designs submitted and... I'll leave it at that.
Now I have to factor in a rebody in the amount of work I would have to do to build one. Cheap, but so expensive. I was sure I was going to get one but... very frustrated.

I followed the contest, as well, and you put it more diplomatically than I would have, but I fully agree with you.

Actually, that is an argument that I have made in other venues...
A stripped out race-ready speedster-ized Boxster is a more compelling mid-engined boxer-powered sports/race car than this.
And considering how cheap one could likely pick up a used base 986 Boxster with some cosmetic issues, it might not be that much more expensive. Especially if the interior, top, and other take-off pieces can be sold, in the case of a race car.
Fully finishing one of these 818s as a road car could be significantly more than a buying a stock, running 986 Boxster as a road car.
